McLaren issue Red Bull warning

McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh has warned Red Bull that his team's poor form recently proves that no team is guaranteed success in Formula One.
The Woking team finished third in the Constructors' Championship in 2012 with Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button ending fourth and fifth respectively in the Drivers' Championship after Button won at the final race of the year.
Whitmarsh's team then struggled to continue that strong form this year and finished the season without a single podium and ended in fifth overall, 197 points behind Lotus.
Red Bull went from strength to strength in 2013 and wrapped up their fourth consecutive Championship double as well as winning the last nine races of the season, rival teams are wondering if anything can be done to stop them from continuing their dominance in 2014, despite several new regulations coming into effect.
Whitmarsh, however, believes his team's lack of form this year proves that Red Bull can suffer a similar fate in the near future.
"It is foreseeable it could [extend their victory run], because they have done a good job," the McLaren boss told Autosport.
"But at the same time, sadly I can give the McLaren example of this year.
"We didn't decimate the opposition but we were dominant in the last few races of last year, and we certainly weren't this year. Maybe though, they are cleverer than us.
"Recently I don't think the engine has been a performance differentiator, or a reliability differentiator.
"But the power train, fuel efficiency, heat rejection, the overall power of it, the efficiency of ERS, the packaging, and all those things surrounding it means you would imagine it might be now.
"So that might be a differentiator that is to some extent out of their hands."
